Yankees Miss Playoffs For First Time Since 2016

Sep 25, 2023 12:27 AM

The end has officially arrived for this year's New York Yankees.

While a bevy of key injuries and a season's worth of offensive struggles long made it seem that their run of six straight postseason appearances was likely going to be halted, that conclusion mercifully and officially arrived on a Sunday afternoon at Yankee Stadium.

Under a steady, relentless rainfall and amid powerful, gusty winds brought on by nearby Tropical Storm Ophelia, the Yankees lost to the Arizona Diamondbacks 7-1, falling out of contention for the final wild-card spot.

Astros Fall Two Outs Shy Of Combined No-Hitter

Sep 14, 2023 6:56 AM

The Houston Astros fell two outs shy of a combined no-hitter against the Oakland Athletics on Wednesday night.

Hunter Brown and the Astros held the A's hitless until Ryan Noda's one-out single in the ninth inning of the 6-2 victory, which sent Oakland to its first consecutive 100-loss seasons since the 1960s.

Brown pitched five innings, and Rafael Montero, Hector Neris and Bryan Abreu followed with perfect innings each as Houston retired 11 straight batters.

Seth Brown's single and Shea Langeliers' sacrifice fly drove in runs before Pressly finished the two-hitter by throwing a called third strike past Brent Rooker.

Dusty Baker said they didn't talk about the no-hitter in the dugout, but that everyone was certainly thinking about it.

"I'm sure all the relievers were aware of it, conscious of it because they had been part of two other combined no-hitters," he said. "So they knew, and Pressly was upset because he wanted to be part of it again. But it was spoiled."

Matt Olson Hits 50-Home Run Mark, One Short Of Braves Record

Sep 12, 2023 1:21 AM

Matt Olson was raised an Atlanta Braves fan and appreciated the significance of the stars he passed on the way up the franchise's single-season home run list. Hall of Famers Hank Aaron and Eddie Mathews were among those sluggers left behind as Olson crushed one homer after another in a career campaign for the best team in baseball.

With home run Nos. 49 and 50 on Monday against the Phillies -- the first one launched off the second deck and the second sliced the opposite way to left field -- Olson entered rarified air among Atlanta's greats.

Sep 9, 2023 12:55 PM

Seattle Mariners right-hander George Kirby regrets one pitch from Friday night and didn't even want to be on the mound when it happened.

Kirby gave up a game-tying two-run homer to Tampa Bay's René Pinto in the seventh inning on what was his 102nd and final pitch of the game.

"I wish I wasn't out there for the seventh [inning], to be honest," Kirby said after the game.

"I was at 90 pitches," Kirby explained, "and I didn't think I really could go any more. But it is what it is."
